Detailed explanation of 304 stainless steel density

The density of 304 stainless steel is approximately 7.93 grams per cubic centimeter (g/cm³), or 7930 kilograms per cubic meter (kg/m³), or 0.286 pounds per cubic inch (lb/in³). This property is fairly consistent across different forms of the material, such as plate and bar, and is influenced by its composition, which is approximately 18-20% chromium and 8-10.5% nickel.

What is the density of 304 stainless steel?

7,930 kg/m³
The density (ρ) of 304 stainless steel is 7,930 kg/m³ or 7.93 g/cm³, equivalent to 0.286 lb/in³. Density is calculated by dividing an object's mass (m) by its volume (V), expressed as ρ = m/V.

The density of 304 stainless steel is 7,930 kg/m³ (7.93 g/cm³ or 0.286 lb/in³). Density is calculated by dividing an object's mass (m) by its volume (V), expressed as ρ = m/V. In summary, 304 stainless steel is versatile and suitable for a wide range of applications; 304L stainless steel offers improved weldability; and 304H stainless steel is suitable for high-temperature environments. The density of 304 stainless steel is 7,930 kg/m³, which is crucial when selecting the right material for each application.

304 Stainless Steel Corrosion Resistance:
304 stainless steel offers excellent corrosion resistance in a wide range of environments, even when exposed to a variety of corrosive agents. However, it may experience pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-rich environments. Stress corrosion cracking may also occur at temperatures exceeding 60°C.

304 Stainless Steel Heat Resistance:
In intermittent use, 304 stainless steel exhibits good oxidation resistance at temperatures up to 870°C and can withstand continuous use up to 925°C. However, it is not recommended for long-term use at temperatures between 425°C and 860°C. For applications in this temperature range, 304L stainless steel is recommended due to its resistance to carbide precipitation. When high strength is required at temperatures between 500°C and 800°C, 304H grade stainless steel is recommended due to its resistance to aqueous corrosion.

304 Stainless Steel Heat Treatment:
304 stainless steel cannot be hardened by heat treatment. After heating the material to 1010°C to 1120°C, it can be solution treated or annealed with rapid cooling.

304 Stainless Steel Welding
Type 304 stainless steel exhibits excellent fusion welding properties with or without filler. Grade 308 stainless steel is the recommended filler for welding 304 stainless steel, while grade 308L is the recommended filler for welding 304L stainless steel. Post-weld annealing may be required for large weld sections, but is not required for 304L stainless steel. For applications where post-weld heat treatment is not possible, grade 321 filler can be used.
