Advantages of 904L Corrosion Resistant Steel
904L stainless steel offers excellent resistance to pitting, crevice, and general corrosion, making it particularly suitable for aggressive environments such as acids, chlorides, and saltwater, thanks to its high molybdenum, nickel, and chromium contents. It also exhibits excellent weldability and formability, retains strength at both high and low temperatures, and provides a long service life in demanding applications such as chemical processing, oil and gas, and the marine industry.

Heat and Corrosion Resistance of 904L Stainless Steel
Heat Resistance
904L stainless steel has good heat resistance and performs well at temperatures up to 400°C (752°F). However, it is not suitable for long-term use at higher temperatures. Above 400°C, its strength and corrosion resistance decrease. While 904L resists oxidation, it is more suitable for corrosion protection rather than extreme high-temperature environments.
Corrosion Resistance
904L stainless steel has excellent corrosion resistance. Its high molybdenum content provides excellent protection against pitting and crevice corrosion, especially in chloride-rich environments. The addition of copper enhances its corrosion resistance in all concentrations of sulfuric acid, making it superior to many other stainless steels in this regard.
While 904L is more resistant to chloride stress corrosion cracking than other austenitic stainless steels, it remains susceptible to corrosion at high temperatures or in high chloride concentrations. Its low carbon content also minimizes the risk of intergranular corrosion during welding, making it an ideal choice for applications where both corrosion resistance and weldability are critical, such as chemical processing and seawater environments.
Chemical Composition of 904L Stainless Steel
Check the table below for the chemical composition of 904L stainless steel:
