Nickel Alloy 718 AMS 5596 and AMS 5597 Plate Information

Nickel Alloy 718 AMS 5596 and AMS 5597 Plate Information
Nickel alloy 718 (UNS NO7718) plates conform to AMS 5596 and AMS 5597 standards and are a precipitation-hardened nickel-chromium superalloy suitable for high-strength, corrosion-resistant applications up to 1300°F (705°C). They possess excellent weldability and fatigue strength, making them ideal materials for aerospace gas turbines, cryogenic equipment, and nuclear reactors.
What are the characteristics of Nickel Alloy 718?
Alloy 718 is a precipitation-hardening nickel-based alloy designed to exhibit extremely high yield strength, tensile strength, and creep rupture properties at temperatures up to 1300°F. The slow age-hardening response of Alloy 718 allows for annealing and welding during heating and cooling processes without spontaneous hardening.

Alloy 718 conforms to AMS 5596 and AMS 5597 standards and is a nickel-chromium alloy that achieves high strength and good corrosion resistance through heat treatment. It is easily machined into complex parts and exhibits excellent resistance to post-weld cracking. Alloy 718 can be effectively used in a temperature range of -423 to 1300 degrees Fahrenheit.

AMS 5596 and AMS 5597: Main Differences and Specifications
AMS 5596 (Plate, Strip, Sheet): Covers high-quality aerospace-grade materials that have undergone solution treatment, typically annealed at approximately 1775°F (968°C).
AMS 5597 (Plate, Sheet, Strip): Similar to 5596, but typically emphasizes solution annealing at 1950°F (1065°C) to achieve superior transverse ductility and improved impact strength in thick section materials.
Common features: Both are used for critical aerospace fasteners, engine parts, and casings, and can achieve 100% welding efficiency when welded with suitable filler materials (e.g., nickel-based filler metal 718).
