Detailed Explanation of the Properties of 718 Alloy Rods

718 alloy bar (Inconel 718) is a high-strength, corrosion-resistant nickel-chromium-based superalloy, ideally suited for extreme environments ranging from cryogenic temperatures to 1300°F (704°C). It exhibits excellent yield strength, tensile strength, and creep rupture strength, as well as outstanding weldability and resistance to stress corrosion cracking. Primary applications include aerospace turbine components, rocket engines, and downhole oil and gas equipment.

What are the characteristics of Nickel Alloy 718?

Alloy 718 is a precipitation-hardening nickel-based alloy designed to exhibit extremely high yield strength, tensile strength, and creep rupture properties at temperatures up to 1300°F. The slow age-hardening response of Alloy 718 allows for annealing and welding during heating and cooling processes without spontaneous hardening.

Additional Information

Heat Treatment

The following heat treatment should be used to obtain the best combination of tensile properties and stress rupture properties:

1 hr 1750°F to 1800°F (954 to 982°C) air cool + 8hr 1325°F (718°C) cool 100°F /hr to 1150°F (56 °C/hr to 621°C), hold 8 hrs and air cool.

To obtain the best room temperature and cryogenic tensile properties, the following heat treatment should be used:

1 to 2 hr 1950°F (1066°C), air cool + 8 hr 1325°F (718°C) cool 100°F/hr to 1150°F (56°C/hr to 621°C), hold 8 hr and air cool.

Alloy 718 Round Bar Processing Properties

Hot Working: Hot working is performed at a maximum furnace temperature of 2050°F (1121°C). If the service temperature is below approximately 1100°F (593°C), hot-cold working in the temperature range of 1700/1850°F (927/1010°C) can improve the strength of the forgings. Prolonged holding at forging temperatures should be avoided. The material should be uniformly deformed to avoid the formation of a duplex grain structure.

Machining: This alloy is readily machinable in both the annealed and age-hardened conditions. Chip breakage is better and surface finish is improved in the age-hardened condition. Tool life is slightly longer in the annealed condition.

Welding: Alloy 718 can be welded in either the annealed or age-hardened condition. Welding in the age-hardened condition will result in the formation of a softened heat-affected zone.

Inconel 718 Alloy Rod Corrosion Resistance

The 718 alloy rod exhibits excellent corrosion resistance in a variety of environments, including seawater, H₂S, CO₂, elemental sulfur, and chloride ions, and performs well at different temperatures. It is resistant to sulfide stress cracking and passes sulfide stress corrosion tests conforming to NACE TM 0177 Method C Solution A standards.

Typical Results:

Critical pitting temperature: 0-5℃ (32-41℉) ASTM G48 Method C
Crevice corrosion temperature: 40-45℃ (104-113℉) ASTM G48 Method D
