Hot rolled weathering steel

Key Characteristics

1. Material Composition

Alloying Elements:

Copper (Cu), Chromium (Cr), Phosphorus (P), and Nickel (Ni) enhance corrosion resistance.

Low Carbon (C): Improves weldability.

Common Grades:

ASTM A588 (USA)

EN 10025-5 S355J0WP (Europe)

JIS G3125 SPA-H (Japan)

2. Mechanical Properties

Property Typical Range
Yield Strength 345–500 MPa
Tensile Strength 485–650 MPa
Elongation 18–22%
Impact Toughness 27J at -20°C

3. Corrosion Resistance

Forms a dense, adherent patina that slows further rusting.

2–8× more resistant than carbon steel in open atmospheres.

Suitable for unpainted outdoor use.

4. Surface Appearance

Mill scale: Initial rough, bluish-gray surface from hot-rolling.

Weathered look: Develops a rusty orange-brown patina over 6–18 months.

Advantages vs. Cold-Rolled Weathering Steel

Feature Hot-Rolled Weathering Steel Cold-Rolled Weathering Steel
Surface Rough, scaled finish Smooth, uniform finish
Strength Standard (as-rolled) Higher (work-hardened)
Cost Lower Higher
Thickness Thicker (≥3mm typical) Thinner (0.5–3mm typical)

Applications

Bridges & highways (structural beams, guardrails).
Building façades & architectural cladding.
Shipping containers & railcars.
Transmission towers & utility poles.
