Differences between 316L Stainless Steel and 304L Stainless Steel

The main difference between 304L and 316L stainless steel lies in their molybdenum content. 316L contains molybdenum, giving it superior corrosion resistance, especially in chloride/marine environments. Both "L" grade stainless steels have excellent weldability due to their low carbon content, making 304L suitable for general purposes, while 316L is preferred for harsh chemical, marine, and medical applications, despite its higher price.

What are the uses of 304L stainless steel?

304L stainless steel alloy is widely used in various household and commercial applications, including: food processing equipment, especially in the beer brewing, milk processing, and wine making industries; kitchen countertops, sinks, sink basins, equipment, and appliances.

304L Stainless Steel
304L stainless steel has a low carbon content, resulting in excellent corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance. It also possesses superior weldability, ductility, and formability, making it ideal for welding and fabrication into various shapes. Furthermore, its mechanical properties contribute to its high strength and light weight. When exposed to temperatures above 800°C (1472°F), 304L stainless steel can become sensitized, meaning that chromium carbides precipitate at the grain boundaries, leading to increased intergranular corrosion. However, this can be easily prevented by adding stabilizing elements such as titanium or niobium to the alloy.

 

316L Stainless Steel
316L stainless steel is an ultra-low carbon version of the 316 alloy. Like 304L, it offers good formability and weldability, suitable for a wide range of general applications. It contains a higher molybdenum content than other types of stainless steel, resulting in better corrosion resistance and higher high-temperature strength compared to other grades. Its yield strength ranges from 200 MPa (low carbon) to 480 MPa (high carbon). In addition, it exhibits good fatigue resistance under cyclic loading conditions.

304L and 316L corrosion resistance

304L:

Weakness: Prone to pitting/crevice corrosion in chloride-rich environments (e.g., coastal areas, de-icing salts).

316L:

Superior resistance to chlorides, sulfuric acid, and brine.

Ideal for marine, chemical processing, and pharmaceutical applications.

 

Manufacturing and welding properties of 304L and 316L stainless steel

Both grades are easily weldable and formable, but:

304L:

Less prone to carbide precipitation (due to low carbon).

No post-weld annealing required for most applications.

316L:

Requires controlled heat input during welding to retain corrosion resistance.

Use 316L filler rods for welding to maintain molybdenum content.
