Difference Between Hastelloy C22 and C276 Alloy

Hastelloy C22 (22Cr-13Mo) and C276 (16Cr-16Mo) are both nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloys with excellent corrosion resistance, but C22 exhibits superior resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion (due to its higher chromium content), while C276 generally performs better in reducing environments and is typically more cost-effective. C22 is more suitable for oxidizing environments and applications requiring superior weldability.

What are the differences between Hastelloy C276 and Monel alloy 400?

The properties of Monel alloy 400 largely depend on the copper content in its composition, while Hastelloy C276 contains molybdenum, chromium, and tungsten, which provide stronger solid-solution strengthening effects, resulting in higher tensile strength.

Hastelloy C22

Hastelloy C22 (UNS N06022) is an advanced nickel-based high-temperature alloy composed of nickel, chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten. It is designed to enhance corrosion resistance, especially in strongly oxidizing and strongly reducing acidic environments.

Hastelloy C276

Hastelloy C276 (UNS N10276) is a versatile nickel-molybdenum-chromium alloy containing tungsten, designed to resist a wide range of corrosive environments. C276 is particularly effective in extreme conditions where problems such as pitting corrosion, stress corrosion cracking (SCC), and crevice corrosion are prevalent. For decades, it has been widely used in various industries exposed to harsh chemical environments.

Corrosion Resistance Comparison of Hastelloy C22 and C276

Corrosion Resistance of Hastelloy C22

Hastelloy C22 exhibits excellent corrosion resistance to a wide range of chemical environments, including both oxidizing and reducing acids. It has superior resistance to oxidizing agents such as nitric acid and ferric ions, making it particularly suitable for environments where such oxidizers are present. Its high chromium content ensures excellent protection against the following types of corrosion:

Aqueous corrosion
Pitting and crevice corrosion
Stress corrosion cracking (SCC)

Corrosion Resistance of Hastelloy C276

Hastelloy C276 has long been a benchmark corrosion-resistant alloy in the industry. Its corrosion resistance in harsh environments, including wet chlorine, hypochlorites, chlorine dioxide, hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, and phosphoric acid, is well-established. The molybdenum and tungsten in C276 enhance its resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. It also performs well in reducing environments where localized corrosion can be a problem, such as:

Sulfuric acid
Hydrochloric acid
Hydrogen chloride gas
High-temperature contaminated media

Applications of Hastelloy C22 and C276

Typical Applications of Hastelloy C22:
Oil and Gas Industry: Equipment exposed to highly corrosive fluids, such as acid gas processing with high concentrations of hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), benefits from C22's excellent corrosion resistance.
Chemical Processing: C22 is resistant to oxidizing environments, making it ideal for reactors, heat exchangers, and piping systems handling mixed acids or chlorine-containing chemicals.
Marine Engineering: Due to its superior resistance to seawater corrosion, Hastelloy C22 is used in desalination systems and offshore platforms.
Aerospace: The combination of corrosion resistance and mechanical strength makes C22 an ideal material for components exposed to harsh atmospheric and chemical environments.

Applications of Hastelloy C22 and C276

Typical Applications of Hastelloy C276:
Chemical Processing Plants: Hastelloy C276 is used in equipment handling reducing acids such as hydrochloric and sulfuric acid.
Pharmaceutical Industry: C276 is widely used by pharmaceutical manufacturers because its high purity and corrosion resistance are crucial for preventing contamination.
Pollution Control: For flue gas desulfurization (FGD) systems, engineers often choose C276 because of its strong resistance to acidic gases and sulfur compounds.
Pulp and Paper Industry: C276 performs well in environments where bleaching agents (such as chlorine dioxide and sulfites) would severely corrode other materials.
