What is the difference between 304 steel plate and 316 stainless steel plate

The primary difference between 304 and 316 stainless steel lies in their composition and resulting corrosion resistance. 316 stainless steel contains molybdenum, which enhances its resistance to chloride and bulk corrosion, making it an excellent choice for marine applications or harsh environments involving chemicals. While both are austenitic and generally non-magnetic, 316 stainless steel offers slightly superior mechanical properties and is generally more expensive.

Can magnets attract 304 stainless steel?

Typically, magnets don't attract 304 stainless steel strongly, as it's typically austenitic and known for being non-magnetic. However, cold working (such as bending, rolling, or machining) causes some of the austenite phase to transform into martensite, which is magnetic. Therefore, while a magnet may not attract 304 stainless steel strongly, it may exhibit some weak magnetic attraction, especially if it has been cold worked.

Differences Between SS 316 Plates and SS 304 Plates

When comparing 316 stainless steel (SS316) and 304 stainless steel (SS304) plate, there are several key differences. SS316 plate is more corrosion-resistant than SS304 and has a higher tolerance to chloride media, making it well-suited for applications exposed to corrosive environments. SS316 also offers higher elevated temperature strength, withstanding temperatures up to 900°C/1650°F without significant degradation. SS316 exhibits higher strength at elevated temperatures than SS304, while both offer excellent hardness characteristics and good mechanical properties. Because SS316 offers greater resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion than lower-grade materials used in SS304 plate, it generally requires lower maintenance costs.

Corrosion Resistance

SS 316 plate is generally more corrosion-resistant than SS 304 plate, especially in environments containing chloride ions. This is because SS 316 plate contains a higher molybdenum content, which enhances its resistance to pitting corrosion. However, SS 304 plate still performs well in less corrosive environments.

Both 316 and 304 stainless steel plates are made from alloy steels, but their compositions differ. SS 304 plate contains chromium, nickel, and carbon, while SS 316 plate contains molybdenum along with the elements found in SS 304. This additional element makes SS 316 more corrosion-resistant than SS 304. For coastal or marine environments, use 316 grade stainless steel due to its higher corrosion resistance-up to three times that of standard grades.

Strength

SS 316 plate has higher tensile and yield strength than SS 304 plate. This higher strength is attributed to the addition of molybdenum and a higher nickel content in SS 316 plate. However, SS 304 plate still possesses sufficient strength for most applications.

SS 316 and SS 304 plate differ in their chemical composition. The primary difference is the addition of 2%-3% molybdenum to SS 316, which makes it more corrosion-resistant than SS 304 plate. SS 316 plate also has higher tensile strength and can withstand higher temperatures, making it extremely durable. Due to its higher molybdenum content, SS 316 plate is also more resistant to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride environments.
