The primary difference between 316 and 316L stainless steel lies in their carbon content. 316L has a significantly lower carbon content (up to 0.03%) than 316 (up to 0.08%). The lower carbon content of 316L makes it more resistant to intergranular corrosion and carbide precipitation (defects that can occur during welding), making it a preferred choice for welding applications such as pharmaceutical equipment and chemical processing vessels. 316 stainless steel offers slightly improved mechanical properties, such as strength and creep resistance, making it more suitable for non-welded components or applications where weld corrosion is less of a concern.

Is 316L stainless steel waterproof?

While 316L stainless steel is highly water-resistant, it's not completely waterproof. While it's known for its excellent corrosion resistance, especially in aqueous environments, prolonged exposure to harsh environments like saltwater or chlorinated water will eventually damage its protective coating.
