Stainless Steel Grade 304 Surface Finishes

Stainless Steel Grade 304 Surface Finishes

The surface finish of 304 stainless steel not only affects its aesthetics but also significantly impacts performance, reliability, and other factors.

Regardless of the specific application or end use of 304 stainless steel, its surface finish should be carefully selected to best meet customer needs. This is because, in addition to providing a desired appearance, the choice of surface finish also affects properties such as corrosion resistance and electrical performance, weldability, fabrication process, and various economic factors.

What is the 304 grade stainless steel finish?

304 Grade Stainless Steel Finish

304 stainless steel 2B finish is a satin finish with a smooth surface, unlike the brushed finish commonly found on kitchen appliances. 304 stainless steel 2B finish is light gray in color. 304 stainless steel 2B finish may or may not have a protective film to prevent scratches.

What is stainless steel surface finish?
Surface finish refers to the visual appearance of the metal and can be achieved through various finishing methods, including calendaring, polishing, and sandblasting. These finishes range from dull to bright, even including specialized textures, and can be mechanically applied for highly specialized applications.
Many factors influence surface finish, including production process, material thickness, roller surface finish, cleanliness, and mechanical grinding.

As-rolled finishes
These finishes are the base as-sold condition for all stainless steel plate products, whether hot-rolled or cold-rolled. They are commonly used in many applications and serve as a starting point for mechanical polishing and other finishing processes. To maximize corrosion resistance, most steel is pickled (acid-washed) to remove scale accumulated during hot rolling and annealing (except for bright annealed finishes).

No. 1 finish
The No. 1 finish is produced using a hot-rolled, annealed, and pickled process. This process produces a matte finish and is typically used in applications where a smooth decorative surface is not required, such as high-temperature applications.

2D Surface Finish
The 2D surface finish is produced using a cold rolling, annealing, and pickling process. The surface is smooth, matte, and non-reflective. It is ideal for deep drawing applications and is widely used in automotive exhaust components, hardware, and chemical equipment.

2B Surface Finish
The 2B surface finish is produced using a cold rolling, annealing, and pickling process, followed by light tempering using polishing rollers. The surface is smooth, slightly reflective, and bright. It is a common cold rolled surface finish used for cookware, small storage tanks, and pharmaceutical equipment.

Bright Annealed (BA) Surface Finish
The bright annealed surface finish is cold rolled, followed by annealing in a controlled protective atmosphere to prevent scale formation during the annealing process. Because a thin oxide film forms during the annealing process, pickling is not required. It is suitable for decorative utensils, surgical instruments, and cookware.

Mechanically Polished Surface Finish
These surface finishes require the use of an abrasive to effectively remove the steel surface to a certain extent.
