Will Q550NH rust through continuously after it starts to rust?

Q550NH weathering steel will not rust through continuously after initial rusting because its specially designed alloy composition forms a protective patina that significantly slows further corrosion. Here's why:

Key Mechanism:

Self-Limiting Rust Layer:

The rust (patina) formed on Q550NH is dense and adherent, composed of Cu/Cr/Ni-enriched oxides that act as a barrier against moisture/oxygen.

This layer stabilizes within 6–24 months, reducing the corrosion rate to ≤0.002 mm/year in most atmospheres (per ISO 9223).

Alloy Protection:

Elements like copper (Cu) and chromium (Cr) promote the formation of stable rust compounds, preventing deep penetration.

Exceptions (When Corrosion May Progress):

Constant wetness/submersion: Patina cannot stabilize (e.g., buried or splash zones).

High chloride exposure: Coastal areas may require supplemental protection.

Mechanical damage: Scratches/cracks exposing bare steel restart localized rusting.

Maintenance Tip:

For harsh environments, periodically remove loose rust and apply tannic acid to reinforce the patina.
