What Is Stainless Steel?
Stainless steel is a type of alloy steel that can resist corrosion from atmospheric conditions, steam, water, and weakly corrosive environments, as well as chemical media such as acids, alkalis, and salts. It is also commonly referred to as stainless acid-resistant steel. In practice, materials that resist weak corrosive environments are generally called "stainless steel."
Types of Stainless Steel
Stainless steels are typically classified by their metallographic structure into three categories: austenitic, ferritic, and martensitic stainless steels. Based on these three, other types have been developed, such as duplex stainless steel, precipitation-hardening stainless steel, and high-alloy steels with iron content below 50%.
In general, apart from alloy steels, austenitic stainless steels demonstrate excellent corrosion resistance. For less aggressive environments, ferritic stainless steels are a suitable choice. In mildly corrosive conditions, when higher strength or hardness is required, martensitic or precipitation-hardening stainless steels can be considered.
Common Stainless Steel Grades Used in Instrumentation and Their Properties
◆ 304 Stainless Steel
This is one of the most widely used and versatile austenitic stainless steels. It is suitable for manufacturing deep-drawing components, pipelines and containers for acid media, structural parts, and various instrument housings. It can also be used for producing non-magnetic and low-temperature equipment or components.
◆ 304L Stainless Steel
This ultra-low carbon austenitic stainless steel was developed to address the issue of intergranular corrosion in 304 due to the precipitation of Cr23C6 under certain conditions. Its resistance to intergranular corrosion in the sensitized state is significantly better than that of 304. Apart from slightly lower strength, its properties are similar to 321 stainless steel. It is ideal for corrosion-resistant equipment and components that require welding but cannot undergo solution treatment, and it is also suitable for making various instrument housings.
◆ 316 Stainless Steel
Based on the 10Cr18Ni12 composition, this steel has molybdenum added to enhance its resistance to reducing environments and pitting corrosion. Its corrosion resistance is superior to 304, particularly in seawater and other corrosive media, making it suitable for applications where pitting resistance is critical.
◆ 316L Stainless Steel
This is an ultra-low carbon version of austenitic stainless steel with excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion in sensitized conditions. It is particularly suitable for the fabrication of thick-section welded components and equipment and is widely used in the petrochemical industry and other environments with high corrosion resistance requirements.
