What You Need to Know About 904L Stainless Steel Plate

904L stainless steel plates offer excellent corrosion resistance, particularly in environments with strong reducing acids like sulfuric acid, making them a popular choice for demanding industrial applications. They are also known for their excellent weldability and formability, making them suitable for a variety of manufacturing processes.

What's so special about 904L steel?

904L alloy offers excellent resistance to uniform corrosion, pitting corrosion, crevice corrosion, and chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking (SCC). In sulfuric, phosphoric, and fatty acid environments, it outperforms 316L and 317LMN.

Composition of Stainless Steel 904L

904L stainless steel is composed of iron, chromium (24-26%), nickel (19-21%), molybdenum (4-5%), and trace amounts of other elements such as carbon, manganese, silicon, phosphorus, and sulfur. This combination creates a highly corrosion-resistant alloy grade used in a wide range of applications, from pulp and paper processing to chemical processing equipment. 904L also exhibits excellent acid resistance, making it suitable for use in sour production environments, while maintaining its strength at high temperatures. 904L stainless steel has a low carbon content (0.020%), 20-23% chromium, 23-28% nickel, 4.5-5.5% molybdenum, 1.45-2% copper, 0.1-0.3% nitrogen, and the remainder is iron. This alloy exhibits excellent welding and forming characteristics. The increased molybdenum content contributes to its superior corrosion resistance compared to other alloys, making it highly resistant to crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking in chloride environments.

Properties of 904L Stainless Steel

904L stainless steel is a low-carbon, high-alloy austenitic stainless steel. It offers excellent corrosion resistance in a wide range of environments, particularly to sulfuric and phosphoric acids. It offers superior resistance to general and localized corrosion compared to other standard stainless steel grades. Its excellent formability, weldability, toughness, and strong work-hardening properties make 904L stainless steel an ideal choice for complex engineering applications. Its higher molybdenum content enhances its strength, making it stronger and more durable than traditional austenitic 316 or 304 grades.
