Thickness and Strength:
Use thicker gauges (e.g., ≥4 mm) to account for potential corrosion allowance if needed.
Ensure yield strength (≥355 MPa for Q355NH) aligns with wind load and structural demands.
2. Patina Formation and Aesthetic Control
Uniform Rust Development:
Pre-oxidize panels artificially (e.g., chemical acceleration with CuSO₄ spray) to achieve consistent color upfront and avoid streaking.
Sandblast surfaces (SA 2.5) before installation to remove mill scale and ensure even patina nucleation.
Runoff Management:
Design drip edges and sloping surfaces (≥3°) to prevent rust-staining adjacent materials (e.g., glass, concrete).
Rinse panels periodically during the first 6–12 months to wash away loose rust and pollutants.
3. Structural and Connection Design
Thermal Expansion:
Accommodate thermal movement (coefficient ~12 × 10⁻⁶/°C) with slotted bolt holes and expansion joints.
Galvanic Corrosion:
Isolate weathering steel from dissimilar metals (e.g., aluminum, stainless steel) using non-conductive gaskets or coatings to prevent electrochemical corrosion.
Fasteners and Welds:
Use weathering steel-compatible fasteners (e.g., ASTM A325 Type 3) and low-hydrogen welding electrodes to maintain corrosion resistance at connections.
Grind welds smooth to avoid crevices where moisture can accumulate.
4. Environmental Adaptations
Harsh Environments:
In coastal or industrial areas, specify higher-alloy grades (e.g., Q415NHC with increased Ni/Cr) or apply clear sealants (e.g., silane-based) to block chloride/SO₂ penetration.
Drainage Details:
Avoid water traps; incorporate weep holes and drainage channels behind panels.
5. Maintenance and Monitoring
Initial Maintenance:
Inspect annually for pitting or uneven rust, especially in crevices or joints.
Cleaning:
Use low-pressure water washing to remove dirt and pollutants without damaging the patina.
