Chemical Composition (Typical, EN 10025-5)
| Element | Composition (%) | Role |
|---|---|---|
| C | ≤0.12 | Controls strength & weldability |
| Si | 0.25–0.75 | Enhances oxidation resistance |
| Mn | 0.50–1.50 | Improves hardenability |
| P | 0.06–0.15 | Accelerates protective patina |
| S | ≤0.030 | Minimizes brittleness |
| Cu | 0.25–0.55 | Key for corrosion resistance |
| Cr | 0.40–1.25 | Weathering resistance |
2. Corrosion Resistance & Weathering Mechanism
Forms a protective rust layer (patina) when exposed to weather, similar to Corten steel.
Best for:
Urban/rural atmospheres (low chloride/sulfur).
Bridges, facades, containers, and outdoor sculptures.
Not recommended for:
Coastal/marine environments (high chloride → pitting).
Buried/immersed applications (requires coatings).
3. Comparison to Other Weathering Steels
| Grade | Standard | Yield Strength | Key Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| S355J2WP | EN 10025-5 | ≥355 MPa | European equivalent to Corten B, optimized for welding |
| Corten A | ASTM A242 | ≥345 MPa | Higher P content (faster patina) |
| Corten B | ASTM A588 | ≥345 MPa | Better toughness for bridges |
4. Applications of S355J2WP Hot Rolled Plate
Architectural structures (rust-colored facades).
Bridges & highway gantries (no painting needed).
Railway wagons & shipping containers.
Transmission towers & outdoor art.
5. Fabrication & Welding Guidelines
Machining & Cutting
Plasma/Laser Cutting: Preferred for clean edges.
Oxyfuel Cutting: Possible but may require post-cut grinding.
Welding Recommendations
Preheat: 100–150°C (212–302°F) for thick plates (>20mm).
Electrodes: Use low-hydrogen rods (e.g., AWS E7018-W2).
Post-Weld: Allow natural patina formation; avoid paint unless specified.
6. Available Sizes & Supply
Thickness: Typically 3mm–100mm (hot rolled).
Width: Up to 3,000mm.
Surface: Mill scale (rust-prone) or shot-blasted (for coatings).
