The Q500NH weathering steel (a Chinese high-strength structural steel similar to Corten) has the following minimum mechanical properties as per the GB/T 1591-2018 (Chinese standard for high-strength low-alloy structural steels) and GB/T 4171-2008 (weathering steel standard):
1. Yield Strength (ReH or Rp0.2)
≥500 MPa (for thickness ≤16 mm)
Decreases slightly with thicker sections (due to rolling effects):
485 MPa (16 mm < thickness ≤ 40 mm)
470 MPa (40 mm < thickness ≤ 63 mm)
450 MPa (63 mm < thickness ≤ 80 mm)
2. Tensile Strength (Rm)
≥610 MPa (for all thicknesses up to 80 mm)
3. Elongation (A5)
≥17% (typical, indicating good ductility)
4. Impact Toughness (KV2 at -40°C)
≥34 J (ensures good low-temperature performance)
Comparison with Other Standards
Similar to ASTM A588 Grade K (USA) or EN 10025-5 S355J2W+N (Europe) but with higher strength.
The "NH" suffix indicates improved atmospheric corrosion resistance (weathering steel).
Key Applications
Bridges, buildings, containers, and other structures exposed to dynamic loads and harsh weather.
