What are the surface treatment methods for SMA400AW?

1. Natural Weathering (No Treatment)

Process: The steel is left exposed to the atmosphere to develop a self-protecting oxide layer (patina) over 2–5 years.

Advantages: Low cost, maintenance-free after stabilization.

Limitations: Initial rust runoff may stain surroundings; not ideal for highly corrosive environments.


2. Accelerated Patina Formation

Chemical Acceleration:

Spraying oxidation-promoting solutions (e.g., copper sulfate or hydrogen peroxide) to speed up patina development (reduces time to weeks/months).

Used in architectural projects where uniform appearance is critical.

Saline Spray Cycles:

Laboratory-controlled salt spray tests (ASTM B117) simulate years of exposure in days (for testing only).


3. Clear Coatings

Transparent Sealers:

Apply acrylic or silicone-based coatings to stabilize the patina early, preventing runoff stains while allowing the rust-like appearance.

Example: FerroGard™ 901.

Advantages: Preserves the "weathered" look; reduces maintenance.


4. Protective Coatings (For Harsh Environments)
