Patina Integration: The coating must not react with Q355NH's existing rust patina (composed of goethite/lepidocrocite). Avoid coatings with strong solvents (e.g., high-VOC alkyds) that dissolve or discolor the patina.
Breathability: Choose "breathable" formulations (acrylic, silicone, fluoropolymer) that allow moisture and vapor to escape. Non-breathable coatings (e.g., fully sealed epoxy) trap moisture under the film, causing blistering and localized corrosion.
No Interference with Self-Protection: The coating should not block the patina's natural self-healing ability. Avoid heavy, rigid coatings that prevent the patina from adapting to environmental changes.
2. Performance Requirements by Function
Corrosion Resistance:
For mild environments (indoor, low-humidity): Basic breathable clear coats or rust conversion coatings (tannic acid/phosphoric acid-based) suffice.
For moderate/harsher environments (outdoor, industrial, coastal): Select coatings with anti-corrosive pigments (e.g., iron oxide, zinc phosphate) or sacrificial additives to resist chlorides and sulfur dioxide.
Adhesion: Must bond tightly to both the patina and fresh steel (cut edges). Prioritize coatings with good wet adhesion-test via cross-cut adhesion tests (ASTM D3359) to ensure no peeling.
Abrasion & Weather Resistance:
Outdoor applications require UV stability to prevent fading or chalking (choose acrylic or fluoropolymer topcoats).
For high-wear areas (e.g., structural joints), select coatings with pencil hardness ≥2H to resist scratches.
3. Environmental & Application Requirements
Low Environmental Impact: Comply with green standards (e.g., EU RoHS, China GB/T 23985) by avoiding heavy metals (chromate, lead) and high-VOC solvents. Water-based or low-VOC formulations are preferred.
Application Adaptability:
Compatible with common application methods (spraying, brushing, rolling) for both on-site and factory use.
Drying time should match project schedules-prefer coatings that cure at ambient temperature (10–35°C) without special equipment.
Temperature Resistance: Withstand the service environment's temperature range (-20°C to 60°C for most outdoor applications) without cracking or peeling.
4. Formulation-Specific Requirements
Clear Coatings: Must be transparent to preserve the patina's natural aesthetic. Opt for silicone-acrylic hybrids for balanced breathability and durability.
Rust Conversion Coatings: Contain reactive ingredients (tannic acid, phosphoric acid) that form a dense, inert film with the steel surface. Avoid acidic formulations with pH <2 (risk of over-corrosion).
Color-Matching Coatings (for visible edges): Pigments should mimic Q355NH's patina (reddish-brown to dark gray) and resist fading. Choose weathering steel-specific topcoats with iron oxide pigments for color consistency.
5. Avoid Incompatible Coating Types
Steer clear of:
Fully sealed epoxy or polyurethane coatings (non-breathable, trap moisture).
Generic carbon steel coatings (not formulated for patina compatibility).
High-chloride or high-solvent coatings (damage the patina and accelerate corrosion).
