1. Surface Cleaning (Prerequisite)
Wipe with alcohol/acetone to remove oil, then gently scrub loose mill scale with a medium wire brush. Rinse and air-dry.
Why: Exposes fresh steel for uniform oxidation, removing barriers to rust growth.
2. Saltwater Spraying
Apply 5–10% saltwater (50g salt/L water) 2–3 times over 1–2 days, air-drying between coats.
Why: Salt acts as an electrolyte, speeding up initial loose rust formation (the base for patina).
3. Dilute Acid Etching
Brush on 1–3% vinegar/sulfuric acid solution, let sit 5–10 mins, then rinse immediately.
Why: Etches surface to release Cu/Cr ions (key for patina stability) faster.
4. Moisture Cycling
Spray clean water 1–2x daily, letting it fully dry between sprays (1–2 weeks).
Why: Alternating wet/dry compacts loose rust into dense patina.
5. Gentle Rust Sweeping
Use a soft brush to remove flaky loose rust after 1–2 weeks.
Why: Exposes semi-stable rust to mature faster.
