1. Superior Weathering Resistance
Forms a Protective Patina:
Develops a dense, stable rust layer (patina) when exposed to weather, which slows further corrosion.
Eliminates the need for painting in most environments (except coastal/industrial areas).
Atmospheric Corrosion Resistance:
Performs best in rural and urban environments (low chloride/sulfur exposure).
Not recommended for coastal (saltwater) or heavy industrial (acidic) conditions without additional protection.
2. High Strength & Toughness
Tensile Strength: ≥490 MPa (typical range: 490–620 MPa).
Yield Strength: ≥355 MPa.
Elongation: ≥19% (ensures good ductility).
Impact Toughness: Excellent at low temperatures (meets JIS G 3114 standards).
3. Weldability & Fabrication Properties
Weldable using common methods (SMAW, GMAW, FCAW) but requires:
Low-hydrogen electrodes (e.g., E7018) to avoid cracking.
Preheating (100–150°C) for thick sections (>25 mm).
Machinability: Similar to carbon steel but harder due to alloying elements (Cu, Cr, Ni).
4. Chemical Composition (Key Alloys)
| Element | Composition (%) | Role |
|---|---|---|
| C | ≤0.20 | Balances strength & weldability. |
| Si | 0.15–0.65 | Deoxidizer, improves strength. |
| Mn | 0.50–1.50 | Enhances toughness. |
| P | ≤0.035 | Improves corrosion resistance. |
| S | ≤0.035 | Minimizes hot shortness. |
| Cu | 0.25–0.55 | Critical for weathering resistance. |
| Cr | 0.30–1.25 | Boosts patina formation. |
| Ni | ≤0.65 | Improves toughness in cold climates. |
5. Comparison to Similar Steels
| Property | SMA490AW (JIS) | ASTM A588 (US) | Corten (Europe) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | JIS G 3114 | ASTM A588 | EN 10025-5 |
| Corrosion Resistance | Excellent | Excellent | Excellent |
| Tensile Strength | 490+ MPa | 485+ MPa | 470+ MPa |
| Key Alloys | Cu, Cr, Ni | Cu, Cr, Ni | Cu, Cr, P |
6. Limitations & Considerations
Initial Rust Staining: Early-stage rust runoff can stain concrete/other materials (temporary coatings may be needed).
Galvanic Corrosion: Avoid direct contact with dissimilar metals (e.g., aluminum).
Not for Immersion: Unsuitable for submerged or saltwater exposure without protection.
