1. Pre-Welding Considerations
Material Properties
Chemical Composition (Typical):

Mn: 0.80-1.25%
P: 0.04% max
S: 0.05% max
Cu: 0.25-0.40% (enhances corrosion resistance)
Cr, Ni, Si: Added for strength & weathering resistance
Yield Strength: 345 MPa (50 ksi)
Tensile Strength: 485 MPa (70 ksi)
Preheat & Interpass Temperature
Recommended Preheat: 50-150°C (122-302°F) (depends on thickness & restraint)
Thicker sections (>25mm) require higher preheat.
Interpass Temp: ≤ 200°C (392°F) to avoid excessive heat input.
2. Welding Methods & Consumables
Recommended Processes
Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW / "Stick")
Electrode: AWS E7018-W2 (low-hydrogen, weathering steel grade)
Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW / "MIG")
Wire: ER70S-6 (for general use) or ER80S-Ni1 (higher strength)
Shielding Gas: 75% Ar + 25% CO₂ (C25)
Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW)
Wire: E71T-1C (self-shielded) or E81T1-Ni1C (gas-shielded)
Avoid
High-hydrogen electrodes (e.g., AWS E6010/E6011) → Risk of cracking.
Excessive heat input → Can degrade corrosion resistance.
3. Post-Weld Treatment
Stress Relief (If Required)
Not always needed for thin sections, but for thick plates (>30mm), PWHT (Post-Weld Heat Treatment) at 595-675°C (1100-1250°F) may be used.
Corrosion Protection
Weathering steel forms a protective patina (rust layer) over time.
To accelerate patina formation:
Clean weld area with wire brushing (no grinding if possible).
Apply weathering steel primer (if immediate corrosion resistance is needed).
