The differences between Hastelloy C22 and C276 alloy strips

Both Hastelloy C22 and C276 alloy strips are high-performance nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy strips used in harsh corrosive environments, but C22 strips offer superior overall corrosion resistance, especially against pitting corrosion, crevice corrosion, and in oxidizing environments. C22 strips typically contain a higher chromium content (approximately 22%) and a lower molybdenum content, making them more suitable for oxidizing media; while C276 alloy strips (with lower chromium content and higher molybdenum/tungsten content) perform exceptionally well in reducing environments. Due to its superior weldability, Hastelloy C22 strip is often preferred in complex manufacturing processes.

What is the C22 material grade?

C22 alloy is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum solid-solution strengthened superalloy with a nominal chemical composition of 56% nickel, 22% chromium, and 13% molybdenum, with additions of iron, tungsten, and cobalt. It is commonly known by the trade name Hastelloy® C22 and the generic designation UNS N06022.

What is Hastelloy C22 Alloy Strip?

Hastelloy C22 alloy strip is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy material. Its main characteristics include resistance to both oxidizing and non-oxidizing chemical corrosion, and effective protection against pitting corrosion, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking. Its high chromium content gives it superior resistance to oxidizing media corrosion compared to the C276 alloy strip in the same series. Like other nickel alloy strips, Hastelloy C22 alloy possesses excellent ductility, superior weldability, and is easily fabricated into various industrial parts.

What is Hastelloy C276 Alloy Strip?

Hastelloy C276 strip is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum superalloy strip with added tungsten, designed to provide excellent corrosion resistance in a variety of harsh environments.

This alloy resists the formation of grain boundary precipitates in the weld heat-affected zone, making it suitable for most chemical process applications, maintaining good performance even in the welded condition.

The high chromium content gives Hastelloy C276 strip good oxidation resistance at continuous service temperatures up to 1500°F (816°C).

C276 alloy strip exhibits excellent corrosion resistance to a wide range of chemical environments. Hastelloy C276 strip is used in components that must operate under corrosive conditions, such as those in chemical processing, waste treatment, and paper manufacturing systems.
