Product Overview

The SA537 series is a carbon-manganese-silicon alloy pressure vessel steel, widely used in the fabrication of high-performance pressure equipment. It includes SA537 CL1, CL2, and CL3, manufactured under the ASME SA537/SA537M standard. Here, S stands for ASME specification, A refers to ferrous materials, and the numbering corresponds to the technical requirements, similar to ASTM standards.
Heat Treatment
SA537 CL1: Supplied in normalized condition.
SA537 CL2: Quenched and tempered, with a tempering temperature not lower than 595 °C.
SA537 CL3: Quenched and tempered, with a tempering temperature not lower than 620 °C.

Manufacturing Process
The production of SA537 plates follows a rigorous process:
- Steelmaking: Converter or EAF → LF refining → VD vacuum degassing;
- Continuous casting or ingot casting;
- Cleaning and reheating to relieve stress and enhance rolling performance;
- Hot rolling to achieve desired dimensions;
- NDT (non-destructive testing) to ensure internal soundness;
- Heat treatment for enhanced mechanical and corrosion resistance;
- Surface inspection and finishing;
- Batching, cutting, sampling, and mechanical/chemical testing;
- Final finishing and protective coating.
Cutting Methods
For SA537 CL1, flame cutting (oxygen-natural gas) is commonly used, especially for thick plates, offering cost efficiency and reliability. Other methods include laser cutting, plasma cutting, waterjet cutting, and shearing, suitable for thinner or high-precision requirements.
Applications
SA537 CL1/CL2/CL3 plates feature excellent impact toughness and strong mechanical properties, making them suitable for:
- Oil & chemical storage tanks and separators
- Heat exchangers and spherical tanks
- LPG vessels and nuclear reactor pressure shells
- Boiler drums and high-pressure water pipes in hydropower plants
- Turbine casings and other heavy-duty pressure components
