321 stainless steel rod is a titanium-stabilized austenitic chromium-nickel alloy, particularly suitable for high-temperature applications requiring resistance to sensitization and intergranular corrosion. The alloy is typically used at temperatures between 800°F (427°C) and 1500°F (816°C), temperatures at which other stainless steel grades, such as 304 and 304L, may experience chromium carbide precipitation. The titanium in 321 stainless steel rod preferentially combines with carbon, preventing chromium carbide formation at grain boundaries, thereby preserving the chromium layer necessary for corrosion resistance.

Within the chromium carbide precipitation temperature range (427-816°C), it exhibits excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion, even when exposed to temperatures between 800 and 1500°F (1500°F). The alloy maintains oxidation resistance up to 1500°F (1500°F) and exhibits higher creep and stress rupture resistance than 304 and 304L alloys.
