1. Saltwater Spray or Mist
• Lightly spray the surface with a 5–10% saltwater solution (non-concentrated, to avoid over-corrosion).
• Why it works: Salt (especially NaCl) accelerates oxidation by increasing electrochemical activity.
• Tip: Rinse with fresh water after 24–48 hours to prevent excessive pitting.
2. Hydrogen Peroxide (H₂O₂) or Vinegar
• Apply 3% hydrogen peroxide or white vinegar with a cloth/brush to promote rust initiation.
• Caution: Test on a small area first-overuse may cause uneven patina.
3. Abrasion + Moisture Exposure
• Lightly sand the surface with 80–120 grit sandpaper to remove mill scale, then expose to rain/humidity.
• Pro Tip: Combine with salt spray for faster results.
4. Commercial Patina Accelerators
• Products like SteelFX "Rust Accelerator" or Jasco "Metal Prep" are designed for this purpose.
What to Avoid:
Strong acids (e.g., hydrochloric acid)-may damage the steel's core integrity.
Pressure washing-can strip early-stage rust.
Natural Alternative:
• Place Corten outdoors in a humid environment and cycle between wet/dry conditions (takes 2–6 weeks).
Final Note: Corten will self-patina over time, but these methods can reduce the wait from months to days/weeks. Always test on scrap material first!
