Is surface pretreatment of Q355NH necessary for the uniformity of its rust layer?

Why Pretreatment is Non-Negotiable

The primary goal of pretreatment is to ensure a consistent and clean starting point for the natural weathering process. Without it, the patina formation will be uneven, unstable, and likely unattractive.

1. To Remove Mill Scale

What it is: Hot-rolled steel like Q355NH comes from the mill with a bluish-black layer of iron oxide on its surface known as mill scale. This layer is brittle and non-uniform.

The Problem: Mill scale is not stable. It has a different composition and expansion coefficient than the underlying steel. Over time, it will crack and flake off.

The Result: If the patina forms on top of mill scale, it will flake off along with the scale, leading to patchy, uneven corrosion and exposing fresh steel underneath. This creates a cycle of continuous, unstable rusting instead of a stable, protective layer.

2. To Ensure Uniform Chemical Composition

The Problem: The surface may have contaminants like oil, grease, dirt, or residues from fabrication (e.g., welding slag, cutting fluids).

The Result: These contaminants create barriers that prevent oxygen and moisture from interacting uniformly with the steel surface. Areas with oil will not rust, while clean areas will, leading to a splotchy and irregular patina.

3. To Promote Proper Adhesion

The Goal: The protective patina must be tightly adherent to the steel substrate.

The Result: A pre-cleaned surface, especially one that has been abrasively blasted, has a microscopic anchor profile. This provides an ideal surface for the initial rust to grip onto, facilitating the formation of a dense, stable layer that is resistant to flaking.

What Happens Without Proper Pretreatment?

You will likely observe:

Patchy Coloration: Instead of a consistent orange-brown color, you will get streaks, spots, and shadows of different rust colors.

Flaking and Peeling: Large sections of rust may delaminate from the surface, revealing bright steel underneath, which then begins to rust unevenly again.

Increased Runoff: Unstable, flaky rust is more easily washed away by rain, leading to more significant staining of adjacent materials for a longer period.

Prolonged Unstable Phase: The natural process of achieving a stable patina (which can take 3-5 years under ideal conditions) will take much longer and may never properly stabilize.


Recommended Pretreatment Methods

The best method depends on the project scale and budget.

Chemical Cleaning Using acidic pickling solutions or alkaline cleaners to dissolve mill scale and grease. Industrial settings, often for smaller components. Very effective at removing scale and contaminants. Requires strict control and neutralization to prevent future issues.
