How to repair local rust on painted S355K2W?

1. Prepare Tools & Materials

Safety gear: gloves, goggles, dust mask/respirator.

Cleaning tools: wire brush (stainless steel to avoid contamination), sandpaper (80-120 grit for rust removal, 240 grit for smoothing), lint-free cloths.

Cleaning agent: degreaser (e.g., isopropyl alcohol) or a mild detergent.

Rust converter (optional, for residual rust).

Primer: Zinc-rich primer (compatible with weathering steel).

Topcoat: Weather-resistant paint (matching the original coating, e.g., polyurethane or acrylic).

2. Remove Rust & Loose Coating

Scrape loose paint: Use a putty knife to remove flaking or peeling paint from the rusted area.

Brush off rust: Use a stainless steel wire brush to scrub away surface rust until only sound metal or tightly bonded patina remains. Avoid aggressive grinding, as over-removal can damage the steel's natural weathering layer.

Smooth the surface: Sand the area with 80-120 grit sandpaper to eliminate rough edges, then switch to 240 grit for a smooth finish (to help the new coating adhere).

3. Clean the Surface

Wipe the area with a lint-free cloth dampened with degreaser or isopropyl alcohol to remove dust, oil, or residue.

Let it dry completely (1-2 hours, depending on humidity) before proceeding.

4. Treat Residual Rust (If Needed)

If small traces of rust remain, apply a rust converter (following the product instructions) to neutralize it and form a protective layer. Let it dry fully.

5. Apply Primer

Use a zinc-rich primer (designed for steel) to seal the repaired area and prevent future rust. Apply a thin, even coat with a brush or spray.

Allow the primer to dry according to the manufacturer's time (typically 2-4 hours).

6. Apply Topcoat

Choose a topcoat that matches the original paint (e.g., weather-resistant acrylic or polyurethane) to ensure color consistency and long-term protection.

Apply 1-2 thin coats, allowing each to dry completely (follow product guidelines for drying time).
