How to remove unwanted rust from the surface of S235J2W weathering steel?

Core principle: Remove rust while protecting the base metal and preserving its ability to form a stable patina later.

1. For Loose/Flaky Rust (Most Common)

Method 1: Manual Soft Brushing

Use a medium-stiff nylon brush or natural fiber brush. Gently scrub along the steel's grain to dislodge loose rust flakes. Use a small handheld nylon brush for details like weld seams or edges. ✔️ Pros: Safe, low-cost; preserves the adherent rust layer (critical for patina continuity).

Method 2: Low-Pressure Blasting

Use a sandblaster with ≤30 psi pressure and non-abrasive media (e.g., crushed walnut shells, plastic grit). Blast at a 45° angle until loose rust is gone (stop at a matte finish-don't expose shiny bare steel).

2. For Dense/Localized Heavy Rust (e.g., Pitted Rust)

Pre-clean: Scrape thick rust scabs with a brass/stainless steel wire brush (softer, no scratches). Smooth small pits with a low-speed rotary tool + nylon wheel.

Mild chemical etching: Apply 5% acetic acid (vinegar) or 10–15% citric acid solution for 10–20 mins. Scrub gently, then rinse thoroughly with water and air-dry.

3. For Oil/Chemical-Contaminated Rust

Degrease first: Wipe with denatured alcohol or water-based degreaser to remove oil/grease.

Remove rust: Follow Method 1 (soft brushing) or the chemical etching step above.

Post-Removal Prep

Inspect for defects: Apply weathering steel rust stabilizer to small scratches/pits.

Trigger uniform rusting: Spray clean water 1–2x/day for 3–5 days (let dry between sprays).
