1. Assess the Rust Condition
Light Surface Rust: If the rust is thin and forming the initial patina, minimal intervention is needed.
Loose/Excessive Rust: For flaky or uneven rust, proceed with cleaning.
2. Manual Cleaning (Preferred for Preserving Patina)
Wire Brush or Sandpaper: Use a stainless steel wire brush or fine-grit sandpaper (120–240 grit) to gently remove loose rust. Avoid aggressive scrubbing to prevent damaging the developing patina.
Soft Cloth Wipe: After brushing, wipe the surface with a dry, lint-free cloth to remove dust and debris.
3. Chemical Cleaning (If Needed, Use Mild Solutions)
Mild Detergent & Water: Mix a small amount of mild dish soap with water. Use a soft brush to clean stubborn dirt or grease, then rinse with water and dry thoroughly.
Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Do not use acidic cleaners (e.g., vinegar, muriatic acid) or abrasive chemicals, as they can damage the patina and corrode the steel.
4. Post-Cleaning Care
Let It Weather Naturally: After cleaning, allow Corten B to expose to the elements. It will redevelop a uniform, protective patina over time (typically 6–12 months, depending on climate).
Avoid Sealing: Corten B relies on its natural patina for corrosion resistance. Sealing or painting it will disrupt this process.
