The Two-Stage Process of Patina Formation
Initial Oxidation (First few months): The steel begins to rust almost immediately upon exposure. The initial rust is often loose and can be washed away by rain, sometimes causing temporary orange runoff.
Stabilization and Growth (1-3 years): The alloying elements (Copper, Chromium, Nickel, Phosphorus) in the steel begin to dominate the process. They form a dense, amorphous layer of rust that adheres tightly to the base metal, drastically slowing further corrosion. The color evolves from a bright orange to a deeper, consistent russet-brown.

Important Considerations for Using Weathering Steel
The "Unfinished" Look: For the first 1-2 years, the steel will look uneven, streaky, and can produce rust runoff. This must be anticipated in the design to avoid staining adjacent paving or walls (e.g., using gravel beds or drip details).
Marine Environments: In coastal areas with salt spray, the patina formation is more complex and can take longer. The chlorides can prevent a fully stable layer from forming, potentially requiring specialized grades of weathering steel or design adaptations.
It Never Truly Stops: While the corrosion rate slows to a negligible level after stabilization (often less than 0.001 mm/year), the patina continues to evolve very slowly, darkening slightly over decades.
