The speed of rust layer stabilization is determined by the "corrosion intensity" of the environment, as it affects the formation rate and compactness of the protective patina (the stable rust layer):

Mild outdoor environments (e.g., inland urban parks, suburban areas with low humidity):

 

The steel is exposed to moderate moisture and oxygen, with minimal salt, acid, or industrial pollutants. The rust layer usually stabilizes in 6–12 months. In the first 1–3 months, the surface will form loose red rust; after 6 months, the rust gradually transforms into a dense, dark brown patina, and by 12 months, the patina fully covers the surface, effectively blocking further corrosion.Harsh environments (e.g., coastal areas with salt spray, industrial zones with acid rain, high-humidity regions):

 

Salt ions or acidic substances accelerate initial corrosion, but they also disrupt the uniformity of the patina. The stabilization period extends to 12–24 months.
