Hastelloy C22 pipe vs. C276 steel pipe: Application and strength comparison
Both Hastelloy C-22 and Hastelloy C-276 tubes are high-quality nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloys designed for excellent corrosion resistance, but they perform better in different environments. Hastelloy C-22 alloy tubes exhibit superior corrosion resistance in oxidizing, chloride-containing, and mixed acid environments. Hastelloy C-276 thick-walled tubes are generally better suited for strongly reducing environments and high-temperature sulfuric acid environments, and also offer higher mechanical strength.
What are the specifications of Hastelloy C276 steel pipe?
This alloy has a melting point as high as 1370 degrees Celsius. The minimum yield strength of Hastelloy C276 seamless steel pipe is 355 MPa, and the minimum tensile strength is 790 MPa. The material also has a high density of 8.89 grams per cubic centimeter.

What is Hastelloy C22 tubing?
Hastelloy C22 tubing is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy containing small amounts of iron and tungsten. It exhibits strong resistance to oxidation and reduction, performing well in acidic environments such as nitric acid, hydrochloric acid, and sulfuric acid.
What is Hastelloy C276 tubing?
Hastelloy C276 tubing is also a nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy, but its molybdenum content is higher than C22, while its chromium content is lower. It also contains small amounts of cobalt and tungsten. C276 is resistant to a variety of corrosive chemicals, performing well in both oxidizing and non-oxidizing environments.

Applications of Hastelloy C22 Pipes
Hastelloy C22 pipes are suitable for applications involving strong oxidizers, such as:
Chemical Processing:C22 pipes are used in reactors, tanks, and piping systems handling strong acids and oxidizers. They effectively prevent corrosion in processes involving chlorine, formic acid, and ferric or copper chloride.
Wastewater Treatment:In wastewater treatment plants, C22 pipes transport liquid waste, including chemical runoff. They perform exceptionally well in humid environments, which typically cause common metals to rust and deteriorate.
Pulp and Paper Industry:This industry uses chlorine dioxide for bleaching. C22 pipes are more resistant to chemical corrosion than many other metals, preventing leaks and failures.
Marine Applications:C22 pipes are sometimes used in offshore structures where seawater and chemical spills are possible. Their excellent corrosion resistance adds an extra layer of safety to these unpredictable environments.
Pollution Control:Scrubbers, filters, and piping in pollution control systems typically use C22 piping to handle high-temperature, chemically charged gases and liquids.
Applications of Hastelloy C276 Piping
C276 piping is suitable for environments with a high risk of corrosion from mixed chemicals. They are commonly found in: Power plants
In flue gas scrubbers, C276 can withstand high temperatures and chemicals in the exhaust gas stream, offering a longer service life than many standard materials.
Chemical reactors: C276 is chosen for its excellent performance under mixed chemical conditions. It is used in reactors, tanks, and heat exchangers where rust and pitting prevention are required.
Food processing: Some food processing systems require piping capable of withstanding strong corrosive chemical cleaning; C276 piping meets this requirement while maintaining system cleanliness and safety.
Seawater systems: C276 can withstand environments rich in chlorides. It is used in pumps, valves, and piping in desalination plants and offshore drilling operations.
Pharmaceutical industry: C276 piping is used in systems that must meet high purity standards. It is easy to clean and resistant to chemical corrosion.
Temperature Ranges of Hastelloy C22 and C276 Tubing
High-temperature nickel alloy steels mainly come in two types: Hastelloy C22 tubing and Hastelloy C276 thick-walled tubing. Hastelloy C276 tubing is suitable for environments where high temperatures are expected. It has higher strength at high temperatures and better creep resistance than Hastelloy C22 thin-walled tubing. Furthermore, it is less brittle than most other alloys and stronger than brass.
Hastelloy C22 tubing is used when corrosion resistance is required but high temperatures are not necessary. Compared to Hastelloy C276 tubing, it has poorer creep resistance but higher strength at room temperature (approximately twice as high). Unlike Hastelloy C276 corrosion-resistant tubing, which can only be forged, Hastelloy C22 is easier to machine.
