1. Cases where slight rust has little impact
Non-critical structural applications: For steel used in scenarios where surface appearance and corrosion resistance are not strictly required (e.g., internal structural components, temporary supports, or parts that will be painted/coated later), slight surface rust (only a thin layer of iron oxide, without pitting or deep corrosion) generally does not significantly affect the mechanical properties (such as strength and toughness) of the steel. After simple treatments like derusting (sandblasting, wire brushing) and painting, the steel can still be used normally.
Low-corrosion environments: In dry, indoor environments with little exposure to moisture, salt, or chemicals, slight rust is less likely to spread rapidly. As long as the rust is removed and protective measures are taken, the steel's service life will not be significantly shortened.
2. Cases where slight rust may cause problems
Critical structural or load-bearing components: For steel used in load-bearing structures (e.g., bridges, building frames) or high-strength applications, even slight rust needs attention. Rust expands as it forms, which can cause micro-cracks on the surface or weaken the bonding between the steel and other materials (e.g., concrete in reinforced structures). Over time, this may reduce the structural integrity.
High-corrosion environments: In humid, coastal, or industrial areas with high levels of salt, sulfur dioxide, or other corrosive substances, slight rust can accelerate corrosion. The rust layer is porous and absorbs moisture, creating a corrosive micro-environment that leads to deeper oxidation, thinning of the steel, and loss of mechanical properties.
Aesthetic or surface-sensitive applications: For steel products requiring a smooth, clean surface (e.g., decorative panels, automotive parts), slight rust will affect the appearance and may require additional processing (e.g., grinding, pickling) to restore the surface, increasing costs.
Welding or processing requirements: Rust on the surface can interfere with welding quality (e.g., causing pores or weak joints) or damage processing tools (e.g., cutting blades, rolling equipment) during manufacturing processes.
3. Key judgment criteria
Rust depth: If the rust is only a thin, loose layer on the surface (without pitting or scaling), it is usually manageable. If there are visible pits or the steel thickness is reduced, the impact is more severe.
Subsequent treatment: If the steel will undergo thorough derusting (e.g., shot blasting) and anti-corrosion coating (e.g., painting, galvanizing), slight rust is less problematic.
