ASTM A269 TP316L Stainless Steel Polished Austenitic Welded Pipe

ASTM A269 TP316L stainless steel welded pipe is a low-carbon austenitic stainless steel welded pipe. Due to the addition of molybdenum, it exhibits excellent corrosion resistance and has a polished surface. Suitable for general applications, it can withstand low or high temperature environments and is widely used in the chemical, petrochemical, and pharmaceutical industries. Compared to seamless pipe, welded pipe is a more economical option and can be processed into various shapes.

What are the specifications for 316 stainless steel pipe?

ASTM A312 TP316L pipe has a minimum yield strength of 205 MPa and a minimum tensile strength of 515 MPa. This pipe can operate at temperatures up to 870 degrees Celsius. There are two welding methods for 316L stainless steel ERW pipe: one is to weld the entire steel plate end to end together, and the other is to spirally weld the steel strips together.

ASTM A269 / ASME SA269 TP316L Polished Austenitic Stainless Steel Welded Pipe

ASTM A269 standard specifies the requirements for seamless and weldable austenitic stainless steel pipes of 304/304L/316L/.../317/321/347 for use in generally corrosive environments. These pipes are commonly used in piping and water supply systems. Both the inner and outer surfaces of the pipes are polished with abrasive belts or brushes to achieve the desired surface finish (e.g., 180G, 240G, 320G).

Pipe Manufacturing and Process:
Welded Structure: The pipes are made from flat steel strips (billets) and then welded along their length using processes such as TIG welding or laser welding. The welds are typically rolled and annealed to make their appearance and corrosion resistance virtually indistinguishable from the base material.

Polished Surface: The surface is mechanically polished (e.g., No. 4 brushing, mirror polishing, or electropolishing) to improve:
Hygiene: Reduces bacterial adhesion (crucial for food, pharmaceutical, and medical applications).

Aesthetics: Smooth, reflective.

Corrosion Resistance: Minimizes surface defects that could trap contaminants.

Performance and Applications

Corrosion Resistance: Excellent corrosion resistance, especially in chloride-rich environments, making it ideal for the chemical and shipbuilding industries.

Temperature Resistance: Performs well in both low and high temperature environments.

Applications: Commonly used in the chemical, petrochemical, food processing, pharmaceutical, and shipbuilding industries.

Formability: Can be processed into various sizes and shapes, such as round, square, or rectangular tubes, generally more cost-effective than seamless tubes.

Manufacturing and Quality Control

Manufacturing: Made from metal strip through rolling and welding, typically using TIG welding.

Quality Control: The tubes undergo various quality tests, including non-destructive electrical testing (such as eddy current testing) and hydrostatic testing, to ensure their quality and pressure resistance.

Surface Treatment: A smooth surface is achieved through processes such as polishing and bright annealing.

About Gnee Steel

Gnee Steel specializes in the production of a wide range of stainless steel products. Gnee Steel's product packaging includes: Steel Strapping: Pipes with an outer diameter of 3 inches or less are typically strapped together with polypropylene film to prevent rust during ocean shipping, and then secured with steel strapping. Wooden Cases/Crates: Pipes are typically packaged in wooden cases or crates to protect the pipes during transportation, especially those that are longer or have larger diameters. Seaworthy Export Packaging: Suppliers typically use standard seaworthy export packaging methods, which may include a variety of materials and techniques to protect the pipes during transportation. Tarpaulin Packaging: This prevents rain, seawater, and other external factors from penetrating the export crates during transportation. Gnee Steel specializes in the production and sale of alloy materials. Gnee Steel's products are widely used in the aerospace, chemical, power, automotive, and nuclear energy sectors, and we can provide customized alloy material solutions based on customer needs.
