09CuPCrNi-A is a high-performance weathering steel grade under the Chinese GB/T 4171 standard, specifically designed for enhanced atmospheric corrosion resistance through its unique alloy composition of Copper (Cu), Phosphorus (P), Chromium (Cr), and Nickel (Ni). This steel forms a dense, self-protecting oxide layer (patina) when exposed to weather, significantly slowing further corrosion and eliminating the need for protective painting in most environments. With a minimum yield strength of 345 MPa, it offers excellent structural durability for bridges, railway vehicles, shipping containers, and architectural applications exposed to harsh atmospheric conditions. The steel maintains good weldability and formability while providing 2-8 times better corrosion resistance than conventional carbon steels, particularly in industrial or coastal environments with sulfur dioxide or chloride exposure. Its chemical composition and mechanical properties make it an ideal choice for cost-effective, low-maintenance structures where both longevity and aesthetic rust appearance are valued.
During the smelting, the scrap of 09CUPCrNi-A weathering steel is added to the furnace along with the charge, and smelted according to the conventional process. After tapping, the deoxidizer and alloy are added. After the molten steel is treated by argon blowing, it will be cast immediately. The molten steel is cast into a slab by a continuous casting machine. Due to the addition of rare earth elements to 09CUPCINi-A weathering steel, 09CUPCINi-A weathering steel is purified, and the content of inclusions is greatly reduced.
The service life of 09CUPCrNi-A weathering steel material is 8 times that of ordinary steel without any anti-corrosion treatment, and it can be used for more than 30 years with anti-rust paint.
