ASTM A588 is a high strength low-alloy structural steel specification with higher strength and improved atmospheric corrosion resistance for structural steel shapes such as angles, channel and beams, as well as steel plate and bars.
ASTM A588 specifies high-strength low-alloy weathering steel for structural applications, including four grades: Grade A, Grade B, Grade C, and Grade K. Due to the protective oxide layer on its surface, ASTM A588 steel exhibits superior corrosion resistance compared to ASTM A36 and ASTM A572-50.
Using ASTM A588 steel plates instead of regular carbon steel can result in lighter structures due to its higher strength. Its applications are diverse and include outdoor sculptures, cranes, bridges, railway cars, transmission towers, highway poles, shipbuilding, and more.
The ASTM A588 specification is the Standard Specification for High-Strength Low-Alloy Structural Steel , up to 50 ksi Minimum Yield Point, with Atmospheric Corrosion Resistance for applications where strength and durability are needed.
ASTM A588 is also referred to as Corten® and covers structural shapes, plate, and bar. This alloy is made up of copper, chromium, nickel, and other elements that give it its weathering resistance properties.
