ASTM A662 specification covers three grades, Grades A, B, and C, it is a kind of carbon-manganese-silicon steel plates intended primarily for service in welded pressure vessels where improved low temperature notch toughness is important. It is mostly used to manufacture middle or low temperature pressure vessels.
ASTM A662 plates over 40mm in thickness shall be normalized. Plates of Grades B and C, 40 mm and under inthickness, are normally supplied in the as-rolled condition. The plates may be ordered normalized or stress relieved,or both.

The maximum thickness of plates is limited only by the capacity of the composition to meet the specified mechanical property requirements. The steel shall be killed and the plates shall undergo heat treatment. Tensile properties such as tensile strength, yield strength and elongation shall be determined by subjecting the steel plates to a tension test.
