Corrosion resistance:

Alloy 400 is a very versatile corrosion resistant material. It exhibits corrosion resistance in many reducing environments and is generally more resistant to oxidizing environments than higher copper content alloys. Alloy 400 is one of the few materials that can withstand contact with fluorine, hydrofluoric acid, hydrogen fluoride, or their derivatives. The alloy was found to have exceptional resistance to hydrofluoric acid in all concentrations up to the boiling point. Alloy 400 is also resistant to sulfuric and hydrochloric acids under reducing conditions. It has exceptional resistance to neutral and alkaline salts and has been used as a building material for salt factories for many years.

Alloy 400 is one of the most widely used materials for marine applications, shipbuilding and seawater desalination plants. The alloy exhibits very low corrosion rates in flowing sea or brackish water. However, under stagnant conditions, the alloy can be subject to crevice and pitting corrosion. Alloy 400 resists corrosion cracking and stress pitting in most fresh and process water applications.
